8 ideas to style your Auckland Maternity Photoshoot (that aren't flowy dresses!)

As much as I do enjoy a flowing dress on a beach for a Maternity Session, that doesn’t have to be the only way you style your session, especially if you aren’t normally the sort of gal to go for a dress! There are so many cool, edgy ways to style a lovely bump, and make the session suit your style! Here are some ideas for non dress maternity outfits for your Maternity Photoshoot!

1) Knit jumpers & Cardigans

Pop an open cardi or a tucked up jersey/knit on with a pair of open, comfy jeans or wide legged pants. The texture of a knit looks so gorgeous on camera and gives a real earthy vibe to your session. You don’t have to go neutral either - go for a vibrant pop of bright blue or red and give a cool 90s film vibe to your shots. With Auckland weather the way it is, chances are you’ll need a warm top at some stage anyway!

2) Matching Sets

Maternity-friendly matching sets (like a crop top and high-waisted pants, or a shirt and shorts) in a solid color or soft pattern add cohesion to the outfit. Get them in a nice stretchy cotton knit for some comfort, and open up the shirt for some bump out shots

3) Jeans/Pants and a bralet or crop top.

Show off bump beautifully and add some cool factor in to your session by wearing pants! Wide legged linen pants are really in style at the moment, so all of your chain stores down to Kmart will have options that will work. Or wear a pair of comfy jeans that you can unbutton and tuck in to show off that gorgeous bump. Chuck on a shirt to give yourself more coverage for some shots too.

4) Overalls

Really could have been lumped in with jeans but C’mon, how cute and 90s Bennetton/Calvin Klein ad would it be to bring some denim overalls on and pair them with a crop to get a peek of that lovely bump underneath! One day someone will fulfil my dreams and wear them!

5) Overalls

Really could have been lumped in with jeans but C’mon, how cute and 90s Bennetton/Calvin Klein ad would it be to bring some denim overalls on and pair them with a crop to get a peek of that lovely bump underneath! One day someone will fulfil my dreams and wear them!

5) Swimwear

Give your shoot a bit of authenticity by wearing actual swimwear to the beach haha! A frolic in the sand and a paddle/sit down in the little waves would look so cool with a one piece swimsuit or a bikini. For some reason a lot of clients are ok to go down to underwear but shy off a swim option, but at the end of the day it’s another cool way to add a pop of colour or metallics (or neutral works wonders too), and you could pair it with a beach cover up too.

6) Oversized Shirt or jacket

Easy solution here - steal one from your partner. Ideally a “floppy collar” shirt that is cotton/linen or a soft denim. Pair it over a matching underwear set or over your togs and you have an easy breezy carefree look that’s perfect for highlighting bump. PS an Oversized graphic tee tucked up can also be super cool! You can also layer this over a dress from your own or my client wardrobe and get an easy couple of looks without having to completely change, love this!

7) A form fitting dress

I know, I know we said no dresses (and I’ve got flowy dresses covered with my client wardrobe anyways!), but a gorgeous form fitting dress or skirt/top set can be a gorgeous way to showcase bump without showing too much skin. There are lots of lovely ribbed knit options out there at the moment, from shops like Dissh through to Kmart!

8) A Blazer

Ok this one isn’t for everyone, but hear me out - there is something really gorgeous about the juxtaposition of the crispness of an oversized blazer, alongside the roundness of a bump! Black or navy can look gorgeous here, and going without any top underneath in a gorgeous glowy sunshine, it’s something pretty special!
